The Missouri Compromise, the Congressional compromise that granted statehood to Missouri in 1821, allowed for the state's admission into the union as a slave state. The laws of this country and the State of Missouri, therefore, were not designed to represent or protect communities of color. A significant aspect of our work is in striving to ensure that the laws that govern the land in which we live serve us now and into the future.
Through litigation, the Missouri NAACP champions safety, security, and prosperity for communities of color throughout the state. We work to ensure our needs are met by defending our right to access the ballot box, receive equitable education and healthcare, achieve economic parity and empowerment, enact a just and swift response to our local and global climate crisis, and reform the criminal justice system.
We file suit and appear as plaintiffs—along with our many partners in civil rights advocacy—in cases at the state and local levels to address misconduct, discrimination, unjust policies and regulations, and bad actors in our legal and political systems.
We will continue to fight until we achieve justice. As we know from the outcome of successful litigation initiated by the NAACP in the past, a victory for us is a victory for all.
The Missouri NAACP is serving as a plaintiff alongside the League of Women Voters, both represented by the ACLU, in a case challenging a law that requires Missouri voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to vote. Laws such as this have already been struck down twice by state courts for being unconstitutional, and we will continue to stand on our belief that the law creates an unnecessary barrier to voting for vulnerable Missourians.
The Missouri NAACP is serving as a plaintiff alongside the League of Women Voters, both represented by the ACLU, in a case challenging provisions of HB 1878 that limit voter registration and absentee ballot solicitation efforts across the state. Voter registration and absentee ballot solicitation are crucial to our work and we must protect our right to engage in these basic civic actions.
While we are not directly engaged in litigation that challenges Missouri lawmakers to abolish the death penalty and end state-sanctioned murder, we support and uplift our partners in the work who toil to eliminate this hostile and antiquated practice. Currently, our efforts are focused on bringing to the forefront the demand for the exoneration of wrongfully accused incarcerated individuals whose lives are on the line for crimes they did not commit.
The NAACP Office of the General Counsel reports on litigation that Units across the country either initiate or participate in as plaintiffs. These reports remind us that our work to fight for substantive change in policies and practices in Missouri is bolstered by that of our larger community nationwide. Our strength lies in our collective power and victories won elsewhere bolster our efforts at home.
Are you an attorney who wants to join the oldest civil rights organization in the country in our fight for dignity and justice? We are always looking for passionate individuals to join our legal redress team!
While our legal redress team does not give legal advice, we receive and review complaints filed with the Missouri NAACP of instances of racial discrimination and unjust action taken against members of our community. When appropriate, we provide referrals to trusted attorneys who can offer support in these matters.
Additionally, the legal redress team supervises any litigation in which the Missouri NAACP is interested and provides updates as to the progress of cases.
